Humor in SF fantasy is difficult I say this after having read a number of works that have attempted it Often the jokes fall flat, or are quickly dated.Having said that, this collection by Anderson and Dickson is a true classic This is at least the third time I ve reread the short stories in this collection, and the second time I ve read the novella Star Prince Charlie also included in the book While there is some datedness in the tropes, the effect is that it reflects old school space opera, rather than really taking the reader out of the story.I m convinced that the Star Trek original series episode A Piece of the Action was at least influenced by this series of stories, if not directly inspired by it.This collection suffers from a number of typographical errors and does not include the original illustrations, which served to enhance the tone of the stories.I used to want to see a film version of the Hoka stories, but now I m not convinced it would work ...

The Hoka from Toka are a furry bundle of fun While the first two short stories in Hokas Pokas were okay, by FAR the most fun to be had in this book are the shorts in Hoka Hoka Hoka I was originally introduced to the adorable little fuzzballs via Joy in Mudville in the grouping offered in The Infinite Arena compiled by Terry Carr , a collection of sci fi short stories I adored the Hoka so much I wanted to read about them, so imagine my pleasure when I found out the complete Hoka stories were gathered together between beautiful hardback covers From Sherlock Holmes to baseball players to the French Foreign Legion to pirates sacking Bermuda once a year, the stories in Hoka Hoka Hoka kept me in stitches the whole time Always getting reluctantly dragged along on their myriad adventures is the planet s and its people s human representative, Alexander Jones Along with his beautiful girlfriend and eventual wife Tanni and their assorted children, they re never wanting for adventure when living with these imaginative little creatures with whom reality often loses touch While the technology seems outdated when compared to what sci fi offers nowadays and even reality, for that matter , the sense of fun and outrageous adventures to be found in these ...

A collection of three Hoka books, while cost effective, lowered the overall rating. The first book, Hoka,Hoka, Hoka is HILARIOUS Laugh out loud funny FIVE STARS I m still chuckling when I think about the space patrol adventure. The second book of same but not so much An OK THe Third book. Prince Charlie only had one Hoka as a minor character, and definitively a goo...
