An All Around Happy FindSo, here s the thing First, you have an appealing brother sister team where each sibling cares for, watches out for and admires the other, while there is still enough sibling friction that they come across as believable Then, you have a magical fantasy adventure that is grounded and realistic , with excitement, chases, escapes, thrills and a tingle of menace Finally, you have writing that is a bitadvanced than chapter book level, but still clear, crisp and eas An All Around Happy FindSo, here s the thing First, you have an appealing brother sister team where each sibling cares for, watches out for and admires the other, while there is still enough sibling friction that they come across as believable Then, you have a magical fantasy adventure that is grounded and realistic , with excitement, chases, escapes, thrills and a tingle of menace Finally, you have writing that is a bitadvanced than chapter book level, but still clear, crisp and easy for a newer reader to follow Add to that a bit of humor, the occasional sly joke for mom or dad, and some very effective scene setting and descriptive bits, and what s not to like This is Book 1 of a series, Knightscares series , that runs to eight books All of the action is centered around Tiller s Field, with kid heroes who live in this vaguely medieval village, swords, sheriffs, knights and so on , and who overlap a bit from book to book, although each book works as a standalone In this volume Josh and Jozlyn have earned the enmity of the local witch, Cleogha, and she has sworn creepy vengeance on them A chase through haunted words ultimately ensues. The book has a little bit of a schizo vibe, but it works really well On the one hand, the characters, story, settings and themes feel very much related to what you ve come to know and expect from the Brothers Grimm On the other hand, the way the characters interact with each other, the way the kids think and reason out their predicament, and the style in which the book is written all feel very modern This isn t like those books in which old fairy characters are brought into the modern world It slike modern sensibilities and ways of thinking have been carried back to the old fairy tale worlds The effect is a breath of fresh air through an old school type of story and it seems like this general spiffing up of some old stories and themes could work very, very well for an adventurous younger reader.A continuing refrain in the books is To Find a Hero, Look into a Mirror If you can have that message in a book that is also clever, exciting and entertaining, then it seems to me you have, as noted above, an all around happy find. Please note that I found this book as a Kindle freebie after an admirer left a comment about it on one of my other reviews Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book

Josh and Jozlyn live in your typical Medieval ish fantasy village, with fairy armies and witches holidays Our story begins on Cauldron Cooker s Night, a celebration for witches that leaves regular folk cowering under their beds When the whole town is turned to frogs by a vengeful witch, it is up to Josh and Jozlyn to save them Along the way they encounter ogres and wizards, magic mushrooms and bog beasts Master Gramble, the turtle with the brain of a stone, was probably my favorite characte Josh and Jozlyn live in your typical Medieval ish fantasy village, with fairy armies and witches holidays Our story begins on Cauldron Cooker s Night, a celebration for witches that leaves regular folk cowering under their beds When the whole town is turned to frogs by a vengeful witch, it is up to Josh and Jozlyn to save them Along the way they encounter ogres and wizards, magic mushrooms and bog beasts Master Gramble, the turtle with the brain of a stone, was probably my favorite character, and I hope he shows up in future volumes of the series The illustrations were fine and detailed This wasor less a standard sword n sorcery tale but I happen to like me some good old fashioned SS so I m not complaining That said, it is undeniably written for children, complete with cautionary asides about not eating wild mushrooms without a parent around and other such things that took me out of the story Which isn t a bad thing, of course it just means that I, as an adult, did not get as much enjoyment out of the story as I probably would have a couple decades ago However, this would be a fun one to read aloud to your kids, if only to say griznt over and over again

I loved this book I will definitely read the other books in the series In the beginning they have you thinking who the bad guy is and then in the end there is someone even worse I think thatpeople should read these because first of all the chapters are short and that is easier to read and make itenjoyable and second of all the descriptions are amazing and it is not overdone There were a lot of good similes and the characters, Jozlyn and Josh are the perfect brother and sister.

A signed book Very cool stuff Picked up this book for 50 cents from a garage sale on Baldwin road The authors had a booksigning in the nearby city of Lapeer that I missed once. I got curious when I found this book by authors local to my area It is a kiddie fantasy but it has enough depth to keep me interested Very delightful and fun.
